Buy Nothing Day 1999:
Buy Nothing Day smashing success
Buy Nothing Day was a smashing success in Boston / Cambridge...A parade of about 30 costumed and drum- and kazoo-wielding people to start, with people joining us on the way... I think we made something 'click' with quite a few people...
We held street theater in Harvard Square, professing through a megaphone the evils of shopping, both seriously and sarcastically. We went on a browsing binge in Abercrombie and Fitch, sticking "Save 100% Buy Nothing" coupons into various pockets of clothing in the store...
We passed out 1000s of Shoppers Checklists, Christmas Gift Exemption Vouchers, Sprawl*Mart Fliers, and Save 100% coupons. We found the support of many passersby, raised the ire of a few, and definitely spread the word around...
