International Buy Nothing Day 2000 |
November 12, 2000
Empty shelves in bookstore
(By Darren Hunicutt)
The Internationalist Bookstore in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, will be throwing a Buy Nothing Day at the bookstore (405 W. Franklin St.) on Nov. 24th.We plan to remove all the books from the shelves, watch movies/documentaries, enjoy good music, talk to the media, act uncommercial skits in front of the store to eager shoppers, eat free burritos, and create an atmosphere free of commodity purchases.
We don't really have a particular soundbite as our slogan, we are just hoping to get to talk to people on the street or via the media about how ridiculous consumer culture has become and how hidden from public scrutiny the labor practices of transnational corporations are.
This will be our second buy nothing day here, and in America the 24th is especially timely because it is the day after "Thanksgiving", i.e. the biggest shopping day of the year coming right on the heels of our national celebration of gluttony and genocidal history in the United States. Look forward to hearing what others are up to! E-mail:
