Contact for Calgary: Richard Norman E-mail:
The day before Buy Nothing Day there will be a 'blind-consumer sheep line' in Calgary. A long string of people, all dressed similarly in black, with upc codes pinned to their backs, are blinded and will be led by Mr. and Ms. Corparate.
On Friday 24, Biy Nothing Day, we will be dragging the load of overconsumption by:
attaching ball and chain loonies to our legs wearing T-shirts with a BND message on it (if you have an old shirt you don't mind writing on and snazzin' up for the event) wearing the sunglasses with the corporate blinders pushing people around in the limp shopping carts like on the BND posters (hard to really explain until you've seen the poster or go to www.adbusters.org)

Hopefully, a lot of people from all walks of life will be there with banners and signs and excitement to celebrate Buy Nothing Day.
For anyone else that works in retail, this will be liberating as for once the message is 'buy nothing' instead of 'buy this, you need it and I need to sell it to you'! See you out there."Cntact for Red Deer, Alberta, Canada: Stu Bota, E-mail
Stu Bota on Wed, 15 Nov 2000: 'Hopefully on this day the people of our country, one of the worst offending countries, will listen to what we have to say and will realize that over-consuming is destroying our environement and hurting those who are forced to slave in order to keep our so called NEEDS met.
Our inspiring words will have to be that for the first time in our little oil slurping city there is actually more than just a handful of people that are willing to fight corporate greed."Contact for Whitehorse Raven Recycling Society, Box 3968, Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Y1A 5M6, Canada

Contact for Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada): Holly P. E-mail: .
Holly P. on Thu, 16 Nov 2000: Last night I emailed a few local newspapers in hopes of getting published in some form. Today, I put up posters all over my high school. A lot of people were wondering out loud what Buy Nothing Day was, and I had to explain. Some said they're going shopping that day anyway (there's no school that day), but none went so far as to rip the posters down, as far as I could tell. I also put up a couple on telephone poles near the school, about 3 before my fingers felt slightly frost-bitten and I had to stop :)
On the 24th I'll be headed out to a mall with some friends to hand out these nifty BND receipts I got from the UK site.COLORADO

Friday, November 24th: 'Buy Nothing Day'
Contact: Internationalist Books, Darren Hunicutt, e-mail
Darren Hunicutt on Sun, 12 Nov 2000: "The Internationalist Bookstore in Chapel Hill, NC will be throwing a Buy Nothing Day at our bookstore (405 W. Franklin St.) on Nov. 24th. We plan to remove all the books from the shelves, watch movies/documentaries, enjoy good music, talk to the media, act uncommercial skits in front of the store to eager shoppers, eat free burritos, and create an atmosphere free of commodity purchases.
We don't really have a particular soundbite as our slogan, we are just hoping to get to talk to people on the street or via the media about how ridiculous consumer culture has become and how hidden from public scrutiny the labor practices of transnational corporations are.
This will be our second buy nothing day here, and in America the 24th is especially timely because it is the day after "Thanksgiving", i.e. the biggest shopping day of the year coming right on the heels of our national celebration of gluttony and genocidal history in the United States. Look forward to hearing what others are up to, I just got on your listserve...best wishes!!"NORTH DAKOTA, USAOHIO
