AUSTRALIA
Friday Nov. 24: Buy Nothing Day
Contact for Cairns: Stuart Downs, 298 Fearnley Street, Manunda, Queensland 4870, Telephone: 61-7-40411802.
Email:Stuart Downs on Tue, 14 Nov 2000: I live in the City of Cairns in far north Queensland. We will celebrate BND on Friday 24th November. There seems to be a few people organising events in other cities in Australia.
In Cairns we are going to set up a 'No Shop' zone, have a display about over-consumption, have face-painting for children, have a parents rest lounge, do some street theatre and hand out leaflets. We have already started pasting up notices around town. The city council cleaners take them down quickly though! We'll just have to persist.
Our group here in Cairns definitely feels part of a global campaign. We have downloaded stuff from the Adbusters website to use in our campaign. We know on Friday 24th November we will be part of a global people's movement which is challenging the indulgent consumer culture of the Western capitalist structures.
Here's to campaigning in solidarity with all of the rest of you.Contact for Sydney: Dan Ilic, ICQ: 7750241, E-Mail:
Daniel Ilic on Mon, 20 Nov 2000: There is going to be fun in the streets, Bring some food and coffee for our coffee shop (right next to Starbucks) dress in suits with Hawaiian shirts and cause havoc in brand name boutiques in Sydney, the most classy town in Oz! It's all happening this Friday 24th in the Sydney CBD!

ICQ: 25599335Tom Stephen on Mon, 13 Nov 2000: "I believe it is too late to organise anything for this year seeing as I have absolutely no contacts now, and by the time it reaches the 24th I sincerely doubt we'd be able to a) get a decent amount of people and b) organise those people together!
The fact is, however, that there appears to be little to no organised plans in Victoria, Australia for Buy Nothing Day. I would be interested in contacting like-minded people to discuss the possibility of plans for next year. This year would have been wonderful, in the wake of S11... so if you DO know of any plans, then tell ME about them!! :)ISRAEL

"This is the third year that the B.N.D is being celebrated in Israel (last year it was also organized by us). We have a website dealing with consumerism (www.bdidut.com). It's not designed yet but we should complete it until the end of the week so try next week.
We are planning nationwide events but at the moment I have it written in Hebrew I will translate it in the next few days and post it on our site.JAPAN
November 26: Mu-bai-day
Contact: Gabriele Hadl, Japan.
Web: www4.osk.3web.ne.jp/~mmlove93/bnd.htmKyoto's bustling Shijo street will be visited for the second time by Zenta Claus. He will meditate and relax, while his helpers will encourage shoppers to join him and people in 35 countries in a day without shopping. Music and street theater performances are also planned. We expect at least a thousand people will observe the holiday, and for 2001 events are planned in Kobe and Tokyo as well. Buy Nothing Day is an idea that Japan has been waiting for. The revolution starts right where you're sitting!

NEW ZEALAND
Friday november 24 - Buy Nothing Day
Murray Sheard on Mon, 6 Nov 2000: "Hi, Just to let you know that something (small) will be happening in Auckland New Zealand - but a very scaled down version this year due to chances in circumstances of the organisers."
And Stuart Sontier on Thu, 23 Nov 2000: The Auckland NZ group is small this year, and quite busy, so we've decided to host a make/grow your own, or buy it locally' picnic at the beach. Basically an inward focussed event and an excuse to enjoy the company of friends.
We've done quite a lot of leafletting in the buildup though, so Aucklanders will still be aware of the day.E-mail Murray Sheard: E-maul Stu:
